Spring Lawn Care Tips

Winter is hard on lawns. Mounds of snow can compress the grass. Leaves left on the ground over winter can become breeding grounds for fungus and diseases. Burrowing rodents like mice build tunnels through the snow and leave behind little trails where they’ve grazed on grass and roots. Salty de-icers and dog urine can leave patches of yellow grass. What you do for lawn care in early spring can have a big impact on how your lawn will look for the rest of the year.

The most important thing you should do in early spring is give your lawn a light raking with a fan rake to loosen up the thatch and stand the blades of grass upright. If you’ve never done this before and there’s a thick layer of thatch, having your lawn professionally power raked is a good idea. A thick mat of thatch prevents water and air from getting to the roots and it encourages the growth of fungus that can damage your lawn. If the soil is severely compacted, now is also a good time to have your lawn aerated.

Once the lawn has been raked, early spring is also an excellent time for a light re-seeding. Don’t spread too much grass seed though because over competition isn’t good for a lawn that’s just waking up from a harsh winter. You can spread a little topsoil but a light raking after the grass seed has been spread is usually enough.

We love our dogs but sometimes urine damage is particularly noticeable in the spring. You can apply lime to damaged areas to counteract the acid in the soil. If your lawn has been damaged by road salt, a bit of gypsum will help it to come back.

If you love your lawn but not the hard work needed to keep it looking its best, contact 5 Star Landscaping in Calgary today and ask them about their spring lawn cleanup services.

Fruit Trees that Grow Well in Calgary

Spring is finally in the air and days are getting longer and warmer. It’s still way too early to start planting seeds outdoors but it’s never too early to start thinking about what types of trees or shrubs could grace your yard this year.

It’s a real treat to eat fresh fruit that you’ve grown yourself. While Calgary isn’t usually known as a fruit growing area, there are certain types of fruit trees that do well in Calgary’s Zone 3 climate. If you can’t wait for your next trip to the Okanagan to enjoy fruit fresh off the tree, you could try growing some yourself in your own yard.

Back in the days when everyone knew how to can, growing fruit trees and berry bushes was pretty common across the prairies. What didn’t get eaten during the late summer was often made into jam. Backyard orcharding went out of style for many years, but there’s now renewed interest in growing fruit at home.

Here are some fruit trees that grow well in and around Calgary:

Norland Apple – fruits early and produces excellent eating apples that store well.

Prairie Sensation – this hardy dessert apple was developed at the University of Saskatchewan.

M360 – good eating apple that will last up to six months in storage.

Alberta Gold – produces gold and yellow apples that look like Golden Delicious.

Alberta Red – large, red apples that are excellent to eat.

Goodland – this is an Alberta favourite that freezes and stores very well.

Certain pears also grow well in Calgary:

Golden Spice – ripens in mid to late September. As the name suggests, this pear has a spicy taste.

Early Gold Pear – produces small pears that are ready to eat in early September.

John Pear – bears yellow green pears that are ready in late September.

If you love plums, the Brookgold Plum produces delicious, yellow, translucent fruit that is ready in late August.

If you’re interested in growing fruit in your yard, contact 5 Star Landscaping in Calgary for more information about selecting, planting, and caring for backyard fruit trees.
